Achilles son of Peleus (father) Thetis (mother) was a handsome warrior. As the story goes from Greek Mythology his mother dipped him as a baby in the river Styx which made his whole body invulnerable. All but the exception of his left heel which she was holding as she dipped him into the river. The left heel was his most vulnerable place , which became his small but significant weakness. His enemy defeated him with that knowledge. So goes the legend of the Achilles heel.
We all have Achilles heels in some form or another. It can manifest in our habits, relationships, work, political affiliations, and spiritual beliefs. I think living in extremes and not being conscious of our flaws could be a tipping point. By being conscious of bad habits , we can change and alleviate Achilles heels. Being more interested in another's point of view instead of clashing with opinions, can also be a way of circumventing those moments that can lead to a war of words.
An Achilles heel gone unchecked can as you witnessed in the legendary story become the quick sand of your life. How important it is to take inventory of ourselves on a regular basis. No human being is invincible. We all have quirks, and character flaws. If we choose we can grow and become stronger in certain areas, and I don't think any of us ever arrives to perfection this side of heaven. But I do believe we can master and overcome. The evolutionary process of growing into our highest self, is a bloody task indeed, but without it we remain forever vulnerable to the predictable defeat of the Achilles Heel.
